About De Facto Journalism Co-op

Interrogate power. Highlight truth.

We are a non-profit worker-owned co-operative of investigative journalists — reporters, editors, and photographers based in British Columbia.

We shine a light on systems of power and abuses of rights and authority, publishing investigations that hold institutions accountable.

Our journalism scrutinizes power in its many forms, including law enforcement, family policing, prisons, immigration, health, housing and more — and explore solutions at a systemic level.

Trust is the rarest commodity these days. The trust of our audience, our sources, and our colleagues — the workers who dig up information and produce valuable public service journalism.

Our experienced and award-recognized team has learned from the best in both independent and mainstream media. Now, we’re taking charge of our own workplace.

Our reporting centres the voices and stories of people with lived experience and expertise — those most directly impacted by the issues, laws, and policies at the forefront of Canadians’ minds, prioritizing human rights for all.

As a journalist-run co-operative, we are a democratic workplace. We strive to give contributors time and space to do their best work, to serve the public interest with transparency and trust, and to rigorously protect our sources and uphold journalistic integrity.
